Alexandria, Virginia, March 10, 2003

ASG Alexandrians for Sensible Growth, Inc. Alexandria, Virginia - "ASG's board is pleased to announce that it has selected Vice Mayor Bill Cleveland as its mayoral candidate for the May election," states Ginny Hines Parry, ASG president. "What is important for all voters to know is that this endorsement is based solely on the three criteria made public early in our process, and that Vice Mayor Cleveland scored highest." ASG finds both Bill Euille and Townsend Van Van Fleet committed and deserving individuals; however, ASG was formed with a clearly defined agenda, and the three criteria used for these mayoral evaluations flow directly from that agenda:

1) The extent to which each candidate's responses to ASG's questionnaire are consistent with ASG's Organizational Statement and its policies and strategies.

2) The extent to which the candidate demonstrates thoughtfulness and an openness to considering new and innovative approaches for dealing with issues raised in ASG's questionnaire.

3) The extent to which the candidate's background makes the person a viable mayoral candidate, with a focus on evaluating the person's prior contribution to and involvement in Alexandria civic organizations, task forces, commissions, and city council.

Of the three candidates, Vice Mayor Cleveland scored highest in each of the three categories. His long record of public service substantiates his questionnaire responses and also shows strong support for ASG goals. He presented a well thought-out plan to challenge government to make it better and more responsive to the concerns of Alexandria residents and taxpayers. Clearly his strong sentiment for civic associations, calling them the backbone of the city, along with his voting record demonstrates his continuing desire to protect neighborhoods. In recent years, he has supported the residents by voting against the too-large Woodrow Wilson Bridge project, voting against the Patent and Trademark Office with its attendant 3,500 car garage, voting against a large media convoy covering terrorist trials in the Carlisle area, and continuing to emphasize his position against a connector road.

Alexandria is fortunate to have three mayoral candidates who have demonstrated commitment, dedication and public service to our community, and ASG is especially appreciative to all three for agreeing to take part in our detailed and exhaustive process. The process resulted in Vice Mayor Bill Cleveland receiving the enthusiastic endorsement of ASG as Alexandria's next mayor. ASG urges voters to go to the polls on May 6 and support Bill Cleveland along with our other six council candidates, Ludwig Gaines, Andrew Macdonald, Judy McVay, Matthew Natale, Del Pepper and John Reardon. Paid for by Alexandrians for Sensible Growth, Inc. Not authorized by a candidate. ASG is a non-profit, independent citizen organization that seeks to protect and improve the quality of life for all residents of Alexandria. Visit ASG at www.alex4sensiblegrowth.org.
