Alexandria, Virginia, February 28, 2003
Alexandria, Virginia -- The Board of Directors of Alexandrians
for Sensible Growth is pleased to announce that ASG will continue
to endorse the following Democratic and Republican City Council
Caucus winners who will be running in the May 6 general election:
Ludwig Gaines - Democrat
Andrew Macdonald - Democrat
Judy McVay - Republican
Matthew Natale - Republican
Councilwoman Del Pepper - Democrat
John Reardon - Republican
"These City Council candidates," states ASG President Ginny Hines
Parry, "stand out because of their commitment to preserving Alexandria's
quality of life, protecting our neighborhoods, initiating comprehensive
planning leading to appropriate land-use decisions, adding to our
open space, supporting and initiating alternative transportation
options and providing real opportunities for adequate and affordable
housing options in Alexandria. They have met ASG's criteria for
bringing new leadership, ideas, and experience to City Hall for
addressing the challenges that Alexandria will be facing in the
next few years."
ASG will be announcing its endorsement of a mayoral candidate
early in March. That selection process will include an assessment
of each candidate's platform, how well each candidate supports ASG¹s
objectives and responds to interview questions, and each individual's
contribution to the community.
ASG continues to underscore that one of the organization's primary
objectives is to inform Alexandria voters about all candidates running
for Mayor and City Council through public outreach on its web site,
www.alex4sensiblegrowth.org.
New information will be available on www.alex4sensiblegrowth.org
during the week of March 3, 2003, including justifications for ASG's
continued endorsement of City Council candidates Gaines, Macdonald,
McVay, Natale, Pepper, and Reardon and a comprehensive schedule
of candidates' forums.
"ASG's Board commends all of the 13 City Council candidates for
their willingness to serve Alexandria residents," continues ASG
President Parry. "We urge all voters to come to the polls on May
6 and vote for the ASG slate. These six candidates (Gaines, Macdonald,
McVay, Natale, Pepper, and Reardon) are the most qualified and committed
to maintaining Alexandria¹s quality of life."
