WHY THESE CANDIDATES WERE
ENDORSED
Alexandrians for Sensible Growth wholeheartedly endorse the following
candidates for Alexandria Mayor and City Council. They will be stewards
of Alexandria¹s future, working to ensure that it is strong, vibrant
and preserves our quality of life.
Alexandria residents are urged to vote for the ASG-endorsed Mayoral
and City Council candidates on Tuesday, May 6, 2003:
For Mayor: Vice Mayor Bill Cleveland

These candidates for Mayor and City Council support the following
quality of life policy goals established by Alexandrians for Sensible
Growth:
1) To develop a comprehensive long-range plan and vision for
Alexandria.
2) To support policies and programs that increase usage of Metro,
bus, bicycle and pedestrian transportation modes and decrease
automobile traffic and its impact on residential neighborhoods
and schools.
3) To preserve, increase and upgrade open space in the City.
4) To continue the existing small area planning projects and
initiate such processes for Eisenhower West, the Old Town waterfront
and other neighborhoods.
5) To encourage meaningful public participation in the visioning,
planning and implementing of City policies.
6) To empower communities to exercise greater control over land
use issues.
Alexandria voters who are concerned about our city and the direction
it has taken in the past with regard to development, planning, open
space, affordable housing, transportation and historic preservation,
are urged to read the following endorsements. Learn more about these

visiting their websites, and attending one of the many candidates¹
forums that are scheduled during March and April.
These criteria were applied to all City Council candidates:
1. the extent to which the candidate's responses to the Candidates'
Questionnaire are consistent with ASG's Organizational Statement,
policy goals and strategies;
2. the extent to which the candidate demonstrates thoughtfulness
and an openness to considering new and innovative approaches for
dealing with the issues raised in the Candidates' Questionnaire;
and
3. the extent to which the candidate's background makes the
person a suitable City Council candidate, with a focus on evaluating
the person's prior involvement in Alexandria civic affairs.
