ASG ENDORSEMENT PROCESS

Candidate Endorsement Process for 2003 Alexandria Mayoral and City Council Election

Supporting Documents

Alexandrians for Sensible Growth (ASG) has established a two-phase candidate endorsement process--first, an endorsement process for the City Council candidates in the Democratic Caucus and the Republican Caucus, both of which will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003, and second, an endorsement process for the Mayoral and City Council candidates (including Democratic, Republican and independent candidates) in the general election to be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2003.

All candidates for Mayor and City Council, regardless of their party affiliation, are encouraged to participate in the ASG candidate endorsement process. Endorsements will not be based on party affiliation but rather on each candidate's positions and proposals for preserving and improving the quality of life in Alexandria.

Phase 1: The ASG Endorsement Process for the Republican Caucus and Democratic Caucus

All Democratic and Republican City Council candidates competing for their respective parties' nominations were asked to complete a Candidates' Questionnaire and submit it to ASG by 12:00 noon, January 6, 2003.

In addition to Democratic and Republican City Council candidates, all announced Mayoral candidates (Republican, Democratic and independent) and independent City Council candidates were requested to submit the ASG Candidates' Questionnaire by 12:00 noon, January 6, 2003.

Phase 2: The ASG Endorsement Process for the General Election

The second phase of the ASG endorsement process will determine the slate of Mayoral and City Council candidates endorsed by ASG in the general election to be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2003.

After the February 1 Democratic Caucus and Republican Caucus, all ASG-endorsed City Council candidates who win their respective parties' nominations, as well as any independent Council candidates, will be invited to participate in the second phase of the ASG endorsement process. This phase will include an interview with the ASG Board of Directors and possibly a supplemental questionnaire.

City Council candidates are advised that being endorsed by ASG prior to the Democratic Caucus or the Republican Caucus does not guarantee endorsement by ASG for the general election for Mayor and City Council to be held on May 6, 2003.

Also, after February 1, 2003, all Democratic, Republican and independent candidates for Mayor will be interviewed by the ASG Board of Directors and may be asked to respond to a supplemental questionnaire.

Then, after the interviews and any supplemental questionnaires have been completed and evaluated, ASG will announce a slate of ASG-endorsed candidates for Mayor and City Council in the Tuesday, May 6, 2003 general election.
