Councilwoman Del Pepper (D) - Endorsement Statement

Councilwoman Pepper has been on the Alexandria City Council for 18 years. During that time, she has amassed a wealth of knowledge about neighborhood, city and regional issues that will be needed on the next City Council. Councilwoman Pepper's advocacy on behalf of neighborhoods has earned her the reputation as a "protector of neighborhoods." Pepper recognized early in her political career that neighborhoods needed to be protected from the adverse effects of development.

Pepper has often been a staunch opponent of development projects that would adversely impact our cityıs neighborhoods. Most notably, Pepper opposed the Patent and Trademark Office, which will bring over 3,500 more cars a day into Alexandria when it opens in 2004. Pepper also opposed the widening of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, fearing its impact on historic Old Town and the rest of the city. Pepper consistently has supported holding a public hearing for Old Town residents to air their concerns about changes made to Windmill Hill Park by the City Council.

As a member of the next City Council, Pepper will support legislation that will give Alexandria more discretion over development projects, further protecting our neighborhoods. She will continue to aggressively promote the use of mass transit and work for constructing a Metro station at Potomac Yard.

Pepper will also continue to support projects that minimize parking near Metro stations as another means to reduce automobile traffic. In addition, she will support the creation of an Open Space Fund and user-friendly improvements to the City's webpage, which was initiated under her leadership.
